Pepper, my Pit Bull is my personal alarm clock. I can rest assured that when she thinks I've slept long enough she will wake me up by any means necessary. This usually entails her walking around the edge of the bed and crashing into it until I reach down to pet her. Let's face it, a Pit Bull crashing into anything doesn't have a subtle effect. If anything, I'd compare it to almost being a small scale earthquake.

True to her breed, she's also a wonderful guard dog and always alerts me of anything she thinks I need to be aware of.

She's very affectionate and has aptly been nicknamed "Love Sponge" for her desire to soak up all the love and affection she can get.

The other day I was looking through some pictures I'd taken of her when I first brought her home 7 months ago. With the nervous look in her eyes, the visible outline of her ribs...it was obvious this dog had been through some tough times including the abuse and force breeding she endured for the first years of her life.

She was even too scared to bark for the first month or so that I had her.

When I think back to how insecure, timid and fearful she used to be, it's almost as though she's an entirely different dog now.

These days she wants to befriend everyone and everything including insects, and instead of running from loud noises she now wants to investigate them. (When I first brought her home she was even afraid of the sound of the refrigerator door opening.) She's become very outgoing and she knows no strangers. The only thing she seems to be afraid of now are thunderstorms. Needless to say I'm very proud of all the progress she's made.

One of the Many Reasons Dogs Are Awesome

An 8-year-old pit bull rescued by a police officer who wanted a companion for his mom has returned the favor in the most selfless way possible. When her owner passed out while crossing a train track in Shirley, Mass., Lilly bravely pulled the unconscious woman out of danger, but ended up being hit by an oncoming freight train herself. The woman escaped unharmed, but the poor pup's price for her courage included a fractured pelvis and an amputated leg. "We've always known she's a special dog," said the woman's son, David Lanteigne. "She's going to be OK, and that's the main thing. This dog is my mother's life."

SHIRLEY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – An 8-year-old pit bull named Lilly is being hailed a hero after frantically pulling her unconscious owner from train tracks moments before a freight train barreled through.

The engineer who stopped the train and called first responders saw the dog named Lilly pulling her owner, Christine Spain, away from the tracks around midnight on May 4 in Shirley. The engineer attempted to stop, but couldn't avoid hitting Lilly.

Spain was not injured, but Lilly suffered a complete "de-gloving" of her right foot: all of the muscle and skin were gone. Her pelvis was fractured in multiple locations and she suffered other internal injuries. But even as first police and firefighters arrived at the scene, Lilly stayed by her owner's side.

Lilly was taken to an emergency animal hospital in Acton, where Boston Police Officer David Lanteigne, who'd rescued Lilly three years prior as a therapy dog for his mother who has suffered from alcoholism for nearly her entire life, picked her up and then brought her to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, where emergency veterinarians examined Lilly.

Lilly's right front leg could not be saved and had to be amputated, and because of her age, doctors decided not to operate on her pelvis until she had time to recover from the amputation.

She had the second surgery Sunday and is now recovering in Angell's Emergency and Critical Care unit in a kennel adorned with pictures, notes and get-well cards brought by her family, friends and neighbors.

Lilly's medical care will likely run into the thousands of dollars. A fund has been set up to help offset her care. You can donate to the fund by visiting www.mspca.org/helplilly.
